Rhetorical Analysis
Rhetoric is the art and study of how language and people communicate with, persuade, and motivate each other.
RHETORIC AS AN ART
Rhetoric as an art analyzes how something effectively communicates something to its audience. The tower of Old Main is a strong rhetorical symbol for the University of Wyoming, communicating ideas of pride, traditional education, and inspiration. The tower, being easily recognizable, evokes emotional responses in its audience and effectively communicates its symbolism.
RHETORIC AS PUBLIC ACTION
As the tower is an effective rhetorical symbol, it also pushes its audience into action, especially as it's being taken down. In 1915-16, as the demolition of the tower began, students communicated their sorrows through physical things. The tower and its rhetorical message persuaded its audience to do something about its demolition. Students began writing columns and poems that were featured in volume 18 of the Wyoming Student.
RHETORIC IS ADAPTATION
The tower of Old Main, constructed for its visual effects, slowly became something that represented education, learning, and community. The rhetoric behind the tower adapted as it began to gain meaning in people's daily lives. The situation surrounding the tower changed over time as it began to become this symbol of welcome for the University of Wyoming.
